12 days before the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Right to Vote

Inspirational Woman for Today is:

Fannie Barrier Williams

Another interesting fact…In the 1870’s Fannie Barrier faced discrimination as a black woman even in the north. She enrolled in the School of Fine Arts in Washington DC to study portrait painting, and found herself surrounded by screens that separated her from the other students. In response to her complaints, she was informed that that was the only way she could remain in the class. She had a similar experience at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where she wanted to further her piano studies, but was asked to leave after all the students from the southern states threatened to quit if she stayed.
